At Drop It at the Door, our mission extends beyond delivering literature. As our Droppers walk neighborhoods door by door, they have an opportunity to notice something others may never see: a hungry cat under a porch, a feral colony behind a building, kittens living near a dumpster, or a sick or injured cat that appears to need help.

An estimated 30–40 million community cats live outdoors in the United States. Many live near homes and businesses and depend, at least partly, on people for food, shelter and care. Humane World for Animals estimates that community cats account for approximately 80% of the kittens born in the United States each year, making spay/neuter and Trap-Neuter-Return programs especially important.
The need is enormous even before those outdoor cats are counted. In 2025 alone, approximately 3 million cats entered U.S. shelters and rescue organizations, while about 2.2 million cats were adopted. Shelters and rescues continue to face limitations in space, staffing and resources.

DID Can Be Another Set of Eyes
DID Droppers already go where the cats are — into neighborhoods, one street and one address at a time.

When a Dropper sees a possible feral colony, kittens, or a cat that appears sick, injured or in distress, the location can be reported through DID’s system. That information can then be provided to participating rescue organizations, TNR groups, shelters or other animal-welfare partners that have the expertise to determine what assistance is appropriate.
DID isn’t replacing animal rescuers.
We’re helping rescuers find the cats who need them.
Over time, these observations could also help identify locations where community-cat populations are concentrated, where new colonies are appearing and where spay/neuter, veterinary care, food or other assistance may be needed.
